Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship goes green with new addition

Each week, The Bellingham Herald takes a look at an ongoing construction project or a business in Whatcom County. This week: Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship.

What is happening?
The Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship is adding 10,000 square feet to the existing church building. The new addition will house a large  meeting space, offices and classrooms. The frame of the building is up, the building has been weather-proofed and the windows are installed, said Todd Lapinsky, president of Credo Construction. Crews are now focusing on doing exterior concrete work, installing ramps and putting in electrical and plumbing systems.

Where is it? 1708 I St.

Who is doing the work? Credo Construction Inc.

How much does is cost? $1.5 million

Scheduled completion date? March 17, 2010

What is noteworthy about the project? “We’re going as green as possible,” Lapinsky said. Crews demolished a building on site and used those materials to create the interior trim of the new building.

The project includes the installation of a rainwater collection system where water run-off from the roof will be collected into barrels, said David Verret, owner of Urban Design Group. When those barrels reach their maximum capacity and overflow, the water will be directed into rain gardens for underground irrigation, Verret said. The building will also have a ductless, energy-efficient heat pump system, he said. The roof will be outfitted with electrical boxes for future solar expansion if the church wants to invest in solar panels, Verret said.
